In order to upload a family tree to FamilyLink.com, first there needs to be a GEDCOM file to upload. Described in this article are ways of creating GEDCOM files for different programs: Family Tree Maker, Personal Ancestral File, Ancestral Quest, RootsMagic, and Legacy. Other personal genealogical computer database programs should have similar features, but if there is a need for personalized assistance, please contact the program’s customer service or use their Help section. All of these instructions assume that there is a file with information already in it within one of these databases. For a brand-new file, either use a genealogical database program (one of these or similar), or simply go to FamilyLink.com and start a New Tree.
Click in the following order: File- Export File (options Entire File or Selected Individuals.)
Note: Selecting the Entire File does not mean that you will have all of your living family members showing up on the site for everyone to see. It retrieves everyone, yes, but in FamilyLink.com there are options of limiting who can see what information; including living information to only those that you want to see it. Not everyone will know what your mother’s maiden name is.
If you choose Entire File, then save the file to whatever place on your computer you will remember later, and then use the lower drop-down box (Save As Type) and choose GEDCOM. Name your GEDCOM file and then save it. You are now ready to use this in FamilyLink.com.
Click in the following order: File- Export. Choose Other GEDCOM, and then Select All or Partial and Click Export. You are now ready to use this in FamilyLink.com.
