Paul Allen Named Top 100 Venture Entrepreneur for Fourth Straight Year

Tuesday, April 1st, 2008

PROVO, UT, April 1, 2008Paul Allen has been named to the vSpring Capital list of 100 business executives who are most likely to lead a successful venture-backed company in the next few years.Known as “Paul Allen the Lesser” in the Utah venture community to distinguish him from Microsoft co-founder and billionaire Paul Allen, Utah’s Paul Allen has built several companies that are recognizable to many Utahns: Infobases, Ancestry.com, MyFamily.com, 10x Marketing, FundingUniverse.com, and LDSAudio.com.Allen is currently CEO of FamilyLink.com, a genealogy and social networking company founded in 2006 that is already reaching millions of families with its online family tree tools and family history content.

The vSpring Capital Top 100 Venture Entrepreneurs, or v|100, was created in 2004 to recognize outstanding entrepreneurs who have ties to the state of Utah and who are most likely to lead a successful business venture within the next few years.

Recipients of the award are selected through a community-nominated and peer-selected process. Allen has received this recognition each of the past four years.

“Paul’s entrepreneurial contribution in Utah has been invaluable. Aside from the revenue growth and job creation of his companies, Paul has also been a key luminary in his industry and in entrepreneurship,” said Dennis Wood, Director of Human Capital. “We are greatly pleased to see Paul make this list.

“It’s the process that makes this recognition so meaningful. The awardees are first nominated by the community at large and then hand-picked by several hundred entrepreneur peers,” Wood said.

Since moving back from Silicon Valley in 2001, Allen has invested a good deal of time in networking with entrepreneurs and investors, teaching business classes at Utah Valley State College and Brigham Young University, writing a popular blog on internet marketing and entrepreneurship (www.paulallen.net), contributing articles for Connect Magazine and lecturing widely. Allen has also served as a judge for the Ernst & Young Entrepreneur of the Year competition and for several business plan competitions.

“Since its founding, vSpring has funded dozens of Utah companies at various stages of development, and has promoted entrepreneurship and job growth by investing in the state,” Allen said. “I am honored to be named by vSpring as a recipient of this award.”

UK Censuses To Be Online at WorldVitalRecords.com

PROVO, UT, March, 2008 —Find My Past, a family history and genealogy website based in London, England, containing over 550 million family history records recently announced its partnership with FamilyLink.com, Inc. to bring UK Censuses online at WorldVitalRecords.com (a service of FamilyLink.com, Inc.).

“I really admire what Paul is doing at WorldVitalRecords.com. We are excited to have our census records as part of the WorldVitalRecords.com’s subscription because it will make our census records more accessible to an American audience who probably wouldn’t think of using our company as the first place to look for these records,” said Elaine Collins, Commercial Director, Find My Past. “We are also excited for this partnership because WorldVitalRecords.com has a successful track record and will continue to succeed in the genealogical industry.”

The UK census records comprise WorldVitalRecords.com’s largest database in the World Collection. As part of this agreement, WorldVitalRecords has already added the 1861, 1881 and 1891 censuses to its collection. These records are the official civil registration records for England and Wales from 1837 to the present (2008). More census records will be periodically posted county by county throughout the year. These censuses include images, and also a key-word searchable index.

“Census data is the heart of genealogical research. We have been working for several months to provide this core collection to our extended network of family historians and genealogists. These records include millions of names; individuals who came before us and who have left legacies that can enrich our lives,” said Yvette Arts, Director, Content Acquisition, FamilyLink.com, Inc.

Census records are the number one resource for researching British ancestors. The census is used hand in hand with parish registers and shows families in groups, rather than single individuals. The census also gives ages, professions, birth places, and other useful information. These records, when completely posted by the end of the year, will comprise WorldVitalRecords.com’s first international census collection.

“We have worked with UK data archives–the academic offshoot of University of Essex–to enhance our data and to make sure it is the most accurate and searchable product that is available on the market. We are constantly improving it as well,” Collins said.

Genealogical Publishing Company Partners With FamilyLink.com, Inc.

Monday, March 3rd, 2008

PROVO, UT, March 3, 2008Genealogical Publishing Company, the world’s largest publisher of immigration records in book form, has partnered with FamilyLink.com, Inc, to make its databases available on WorldVitalRecords.com.

“We are looking to work with others who will provide the bridge from today back to the period where our books come into play. WorldVitalRecords.com’s services provide the link from 2008 back to our 17th Century material,” said Mike Tepper, Managing Editor, Genealogical Publishing Company. “There are companies that are really great with technology, but fall short with writing. Other companies are really skilled with words and writing, but not in creating virtual communities. It is a great opportunity to work with FamilyLink.com, a company that can provide that combination of technology and writing, as well as a virtual genealogy community.”

Genealogical Publishing Company is one of our key partners in our new World Collection,” said Yvette Arts, Director, Content Acquisition, FamilyLink.com, Inc. “We are happy to work with one of the oldest and most established publishers of genealogical records in the industry.”

Genealogical Publishing Company has 2,000 titles featuring content from early Colonial America to the Civil War. Some of these titles include Donald Lines Jacobus’ Families of Ancient New Haven, a three-volume work that covers every family in pre-Revolutionary New Haven, Connecticut, and Robert Barnes’s British Roots of Maryland Families, which establishes the origins of hundreds of pre-eighteenth-century Maryland families.

“The great thing about our books is that they are definitive works provided by the leading scholars of our time,” said Barry Chodak, President of Genealogical.com, Inc., parent of Genealogical Publishing Company.

“Our publications cover a wide range of topics with particular emphasis on colonial American immigration, royal ancestry, and county and local history. Our collection of guide books and how to books numbers more than 250, including the most widely used text Val Greenwood’s Researcher’s Guide to American Genealogy and the three titles we call the Evidence Collection: Evidence, The Quick Sheet, and Evidence Explained, all by Elizabeth Shown Mills, the leading authority on the subject.”

“While many of our books contain genealogical source records, a considerable number contain lineage records and other linked material. These titles combined include about 15 million people. The descendants of these 15 million people number in the hundreds of millions today. Our partnership with FamilyLink will enable many, many Americans to go back and trace their family to some of these early immigrants,” Chodak said.

More than 600 databases from Genealogical Publishing Company will be launched periodically over the next few months at WorldVitalRecords.com.

“We have been publishing for the last 55 years and look forward to working with FamilyLink.com to expand our genealogical content into new territories,” Tepper said.

Immigrant Ships Transcribers Guild (ISTG): Reuniting Families Through Volunteer Efforts

Wednesday, February 20th, 2008

ISTG Partners With World Vital Records, Inc. To Bring Increased Access To Online Passenger Ship Lists

PROVO, UT, February 20, 2008 – Back in 1998, Patty MacFarlane McCormack, founder of Immigrant Ships Transcribers Guild, wasn’t doing genealogy. She had always been the historian’s helper (her grandmother’s), but never the primary historian.

“As a child, I would sit with my grandmother at the huge oak dining room table on gloomy Saturday afternoons. As the rain trickled down the window panes behind the lace curtains and spilled off the eaves onto the Lily of the Valley planted along the house, we would label the backs of old sepia photographs and file yellowed newspaper clippings into a shoebox. Over the years, one shoebox became many,” said Patty MacFarlane McCormack, Founder and Owner of Immigrant Ships Transcribers Guild.

Then, when McCormack’s mother passed away, she returned to her Colorado home with boxes of her treasured past and a burning desire to discover even more.

“I thought as I was going through all of these treasures that it would be wonderful to see the actual passenger lists and know the ship on which my ancestors came to the United States. Naively I thought this list would be on the Internet, but there were very, very, few passenger lists online at the time,” McCormack said. “I soon knew the frustration of so many others on the same quest.”

In 1998, McCormack was affiliated with RootsWeb’s Ships List. There were many online discussions regarding how scarce passengers lists were on the Internet. Because of this, McCormack wrote to a few individuals on the listserv and told them she wanted to start a group to help bring an increased number of passenger lists online. The idea was not received very warmly. In fact, some individuals on the listserv sent discouraging remarks.

“I heard, ‘It has been tried many times before. It has always failed. You won’t be able to do it. It will cost too much money, and it is impossible.’ Really that is all I needed to hear, and I was determined to make it happen,” McCormack said.

McCormack sent out a new email and received about 20 responses from individuals who wanted to help. On September 16, 1998, the week of both her grandmother and her mother’s birthday, Immigrant Ships Transcribers Guild was born. Not long after, 14 lists were posted on the Web from the volunteers’ work and were part of the Immigrant Ships Transcribers Guild site.

“Transcribing manifests with their hard-to-read handwriting and bringing them to life online is a labor of love. My own contribution to the Guild is to upload the surnames from the manifests into alphabetic files for ease in researching,” said Pam O’Day, ISTG charter member and surname coordinator from Havre de Grace, MD. “Our work will not be done until the last available manifest has been transcribed.”

The Immigrant Ships Transcribers Guild has more than 8,000 passenger lists and millions of names. These records will now be available at World Vital Records through its recent partnership with ISTG.

“I am very excited about this partnership. I remember when ISTG was one-year old, as World Vital Records is now, and everyone was supporting us. In return, I’m happy to partner with World Vital Records because they provide a service that is affordable and easily accessed on the Internet. Knowing who came before you is a heart’s desire, and it is information that is important for all of us to know,” said Patty MacFarlane McCormack, Founder, Immigrant Ships Transcribers Guild.

The ISTG records include information such as passenger name, captain’s name, port of arrival/departure, and name of the ship. These records will be free to access at World Vital Records for 10 days.

“When our content acquisition team came across the ISTG records, we were looking for records from Portugal. Not only did we find records from Portugal, but passenger lists from more than 35 countries. These lists are invaluable to family historians to help locate their ancestors,” said Yvette Arts, Director, Content Acquisition, World Vital Records, Inc.

McCormack claims the success of the site should be attributed to the 500+ volunteers who have worked on these lists and the 250 current volunteers.

“I’m blessed to have volunteers who are so totally dedicated to this cause. I could not do this without them. I coordinate the overall effort, but my volunteers are some of the most dedicated people in the world,” McCormack said, “and we have become a family. Our mission statement: ‘Bringing Our Ancestors Home: Reuniting Our Families’ really sums up what we are all about. People find their ancestors on our site, and they write to us. We then include any other information they can provide directly to a link on the passenger list. They are so grateful for the work we do, and we hear it every day. It is what keeps us going.”

Before McCormack received her own scanning and copying equipment, she would go to NARA nearly every day and copy passenger manifests in hopes of helping individuals find their ancestors and even hoping to find some of her own family members as a bonus.

One day she found a passenger list which contained the name of her great, great grandmother, who was two years old at the time.

“I have every intention of framing that passenger list with a dried rose. That’s my maternal family history. Holding that piece of history in your hand really gives you a gift. It is a gift to yourself because you can just picture, in my case, my great grandmother when she was 2 years old on the ship with all of her brothers, sisters and her mom. It is an awesome experience. We seek to help you know the brave souls who dared to cross the sea, how and why they came, what they may have endured to get here and how they are a part of the tapestry of our lives.” McCormack said.

Federation of Genealogical Societies Becomes WorldVitalRecords.com’s Society Affiliate Partnership Member

Tuesday, February 12th, 2008

PROVO, UT, February 11, 2008 WorldVitalRecords.com (a service of FamilyLink.com, Inc.), announced the much anticipated and exciting news that the Federation of Genealogical Societies (FGS) has become a Society Affiliate Partnership Member. This partnership is a win/win/win approach to WorldVitalRecords.com, FGS, and the society members.

Fred Moss, Legal Advisor to FGS and “general handyman” worked with completing this event where Wendy Elliott, FGS President recently signed the final agreement.

“I think this is a great opportunity for our member societies. This partnership gives them a chance to obtain discounts to the various collections on WorldVitalRecords.com,” Elliott said.

“Partnering with FGS is extremely important to us because of its significant role in the genealogy space,” said David Lifferth, President, FamilyLink.com, Inc. “We are grateful for their leadership in partnering with us and we hope to provide our services to their many members and partner societies.”

FGS was founded in 1976 and represents the members of more than 500 genealogical societies. The Federation of Genealogical Societies links the genealogical community by serving the needs of its member societies; providing products and services needed by member societies; marshaling the resources of its member organizations; and working with the genealogical community by helping genealogical societies become stronger and grow.

“Societies are the backbone of genealogy networks. FGS, as a society that encompasses hundreds of societies, is an invaluable resource for genealogists and family historians worldwide. We are pleased to work with such an established group of committed individuals,” said Paul Allen, CEO, FamilyLink.com, Inc.

Jana Sloan Broglin, VP of Membership, is given much credit for taking the initiative and spearheading this great endeavor. Working with Dave Lifferth, President, and Carin Green, Society Consultant, over several weeks of fine tuning, the two entities are looking forward to increased revenue for societies and success for their members as they research the various databases on WorldVitalRecords.com.

“The Society is very pleased to be a part of WorldVitalRecords.com, and the affiliate partnership program that FGS and Family Link.com, Inc. (parent company) have worked out. We look forward to a long relationship with Family Link.com, Inc.,” Broglin said.

Fred Moss, who likes to remain behind the scenes, said, “We are delighted to be able to offer this valuable resource to our many society members. In partnering with FamilyLink.com, Inc., I feel that it is a benefit that we owe our members and all that FamilyLink.com, Inc. provides.”

The Society members are given a specific discount amount from the online subscription to the U.S. and World Collections. For every paid membership on WorldVitalRecords.com, the society earns a profit by way of commissions.

A Note About World Collection Subscription Prices From David Lifferth, President, FamilyLink.com, Inc.

Tuesday, February 5th, 2008

Shown above: David Lifferth, President, FamilyLink.com, Inc.

I wanted to take some time and explain to our members some of the important details of our World Collection. Without this information, our members may not fully appreciate the effort that has gone into creating this new collection on WorldVitalRecords.com.

The launch of the World Collection has taken a long time and we have spent many months working out the financial and logistical details of this important addition to WorldVitalRecords.com. We have struggled with the realities of costs and values that we are providing to our users.

We have tried for almost a year to license some of the key pieces of data that we now have in the World Collection for our regular $49 price. However, we have been unsuccessful in licensing these valuable databases that we want and our customers’ continuously request. We have had to make a difficult choice for our users. Our decision was between either:

A) WorldVitalRecords.com could not include the databases that we could not license for a percentage of our $49 per year subscription cost, or

B) WorldVitalRecords.com had to define a different business model that would allow us to pay a higher licensing fee per user.

We, at FamilyLink.com, Inc., made the business decision to create a new subscription model that allows us to pay a larger portion of a higher priced product in licensing fees to our content providers. This results in a sizable license fee from each $149 subscription fee that we pay to our content partners.

I do want to provide significant revenue for our content partners. It is important to me that we provide financial support for our content partners to help them fulfill their missions in maintaining and developing the valuable and diverse records that we provide access on our site for our subscribers.
The math to make this World Collection on WorldVitalRecords.com a reality is that simple.

WorldVitalRecords.com makes approximately the same profit from a $149 World Collection that we do from a $49 US collection. We are paying a much higher licensing fee to make these databases available on WorldVitalRecords.com.

This was a difficult choice for us, but we have decided to license and develop more expensive content with a higher price point. We hope that users will find the UK Census, European BMD and Land Ownership Records, International Military records, exclusive Australian and Canadian databases to be valuable enough to pay $149. The people that want access to this data will either buy it from us or buy from someone else that is selling it for even more than we are.

We are not taking anything away from our current subscribers. We have “grandfathered” all of the international content that was part of their original $49.95 WorldVitalRecords.com collection. These databases that were part of the original WorldVitalRecords.com collection that have now been moved to the World Collection will still be accessible to that ‘international component’ of your original subscription as long as you are a member.

We want to take good care of our subscribers. We have gotten consideration from our content partners to offer introductory prices as low as we can to give our existing members full consideration for their subscriptions. We consider these membership dollars to be an investment in our company. And every month we try to add value to their membership in every way we can. I want to make every member satisfied with their membership. If we cannot make a subscriber happy, I wouldn’t feel good about keeping their money and we will return their subscription fee.
